Guide to Installing Kodi: Beginner's Edition Part 2

Kodi: A Guide for New Users. Part 2

This next article is going to be an all-in-one guide on how to set up Kodi from where to find it to how to install an add-on. This guide will serve to partner with the theme of creating helpful articles for the everyday, new Kodi user. We will focus on keeping the language understandable and hope this article helps teach you something new. By the end of this article we will have answered the what, where, and how to install Kodi, along with a repository, and an add-on.

Now that you have successfully installed and opened Kodi for the first time, lets move to the important part. Installing Repositories and Add-ons.

What is a Repository ?

Great Job getting this far!!!! We really are proud of you as we know this is all new to you. Now that you have installed Kodi on your device we need to load it up. To do this we are going to need to add some repositories. A repository is a storage space for one or more add-ons (third party programs) that fit into Kodi. A repository can hold other repositories, programs, music add-ons, video add-ons, services, and more.

A developer or group of developers will store their files in this repository and you can add the address to the repository inside Kodi to access the add-ons.  Please note you will see repository shortened to repo; however, they are the same thing.

***As always ONLY install Repositories from the official Source***

We will remind you only use the direct source for the repository install and avoid collection repositories like SuperRepo and Kodil (Kodi Israel).  Unofficial sources often are very outdated and can also contain malicious code.

How do you add a Repository to Kodi

So you think you are ready to add a repository to Kodi so you can install some add-ons? Awesome, because we are here to help you do so. For our example we are going to use Mr. Blamo’s Repository and show you how to add it to Kodi and then install it to the system. We are going to give you all the information you need for this; however, many of our articles will walk you through how to install add-ons and their repositories.  For more information on specific add-ons visit our Blog.

First things first and we need to open Kodi so we can add the repository. Once you have Kodi open follow the guide below on how to navigate to add the repository. Depending on what version of Kodi you are using there will be a different set of instructions.  For this guide we are going to explore installing a repository for Kodi 17 (Krypton)

Kodi 17- Krypton Guide to Installing a Repository

There are two methods you can use to Install a Repo; File Manager and a Zip File. We’ll start off with File Manager and the Mr Blamo Repository .

Accessing File Manager

guide

So lets begin by opening Kodi and from the Home Page, select the Cog Icon.

guide

Scroll to the bottom right and click on File manager.

guide

Double Click/Tap on Add source.

Entering the URL Address

guide

So in order to input the url address, you will have to click on None as shown above.

guide

As a consequence of selecting none, a new window will appear with a keyboard. If installing Kodi on a PC/Laptop or if your Android device has a keyboard, you can use that to enter the address. If not, you can use the keyboard provided.

Enter the address exactly as shown above. When done, select OK.

guide

You will now be asked to enter a name. It could be anything you wish Blamo, mrblamo, etc, as long as you recognize it later on. Once done, select OK to complete the changes made.

guide

You have now installed the Blamo Repository as indicated above. Congratulations !

Installing a Repo Via Zip File

Install from zip file allows you to install add-ons or repositories which may not be available in the Kodi add-on repository. These Zip Files can be found through out the Internet, primarily in a developers Twitter page or on FB Groups. You could even use your favorite Search Engine.

However you find it, it must be downloaded and saved in a location on your device that you can easily locate later on. At no time should you open or Unzip the file.

guide

For this section of the Guide, we will use the NoobsandNerds (NaN) zip file.

guide

So as we have done before, select Add-ons in the Main Home page. Then click on the Open Box Icon found in the top left corner.

guide

Please click on Install from zip file to proceed.

Locating the Zip File

guide

Because it was easier to use photos acquired from a PC for this guide, your screen may not appear as shown here. As a result, my zip file is located in my C: drive, therefore it’s a great idea to always remember where you have saved the zip file.
  • Some options would be :

  • Download it on your PC/Laptop and then transfer it to a USB Flash drive. If your device has a usb slot you could install it from there.

  • If your device has a browser, you can download it directly to the storage folder.

Select the location on your device that has the zip file stored.

guide

Almost done, once you find the Zip File select it to start the install process.

guide

Finally, as soon as you select the zip file you will be returned to Add-ons/Add-on browser page. When the repository has been installed, there will be a confirmation notification in the top right corner. Nice work ! you have just installed a Repo via a zip file !

You may or receive a message stating there is an Update available as shown here. Please refer to Part 1 of the guide on Updating.

End of Part 2

Super Favourites

This is not new and its amiss of me not to have added this sooner, but I started digging into a few things to do some advanced topics later and well, never realised the true potential of this add on; its always been on my “to do ” list and i have a feeling that despite Exodus not allowing its use, that SF will be used a lot more with the TV Portal release of its custom EPG app. You may have heard of the author, Spoyser, former lead ‘droid dev for team Kodi, so you know this is a solid stable addon. What Is Super Favourites? In a nutshell Super Favourites allows you to create you own custom Super-Add on with all the best bits of all your favourite add ons (with a few exceptions), along with the bits of Kodi that you use the most. In it’s simplest use case Super Favourites, acts very similar to the standard Kodi favourites in that you add items to it (in a couple of ways, see later), and can then view them in one easy to use list. However, whereas Kodi favourites is simply a...

Project Cypher

This is an add on thats been around for a while, with a mix of content, mostly that I haven’t used to be honest, but its recently started to produce some good live streams with I think makes it worthy of recommending. I worked through some of the content this morning and there is a mix of stuff, but of real interest to me personally is the quality of the live links. The other content such as Lingerie Football and Lingerie Fighting is unique to the add on (AFAIK), plus there plenty of horror under the “dark side” link and Serial Killer content too, should that be your thing. Installing Project Cypher Click File Manager Double Click Add source Type this EXACTLY http://repo.run/cypherrepo/ Name the source, Project Cypher Return to the Kodi Home Screen Click System Click Add ons Click install from zip file Click Project Cypher Source Click Project Cypher zip file Wait for “add on enabled” notification Project Cypher Content The long list of live sports lin...

Exodus - The Latest from Lambda

Its great to see Lambda back in the game, for many of us Genesis was so badly missed! Well fret not Exodus, the new offering from Lambda over at TVAddons, has delivered in buckets with the initial release; in fact I am 2 hours late typing this up as I spent so much time going through things…then i got sidetracked…ahem! Yes there are TONS of HD movies and TV Series linked here – just too much to begin to list… This addon is NOT supported by Kodi TV, do not ask for help on their forums, you can use the Ares Forums or head over to TV Addons. Supported Accounts Trakt IMDB Movieplanet.is OroroTV Real Debrid Premiumize AllDebrid RPnet So this should cover a lot of areas with viewed episodes, favourites and so on. I’ll just review a few key settings before installing – those with previous Genesis experience will be keen to have easy download options amongst others, theres a Channels option – Sky movies all listed here and a bunch of options to twiddle...

Ares Wizard URL Update 18/04/2016

It has become clear that the 3m+ downloads a month has become an issue on the current Ares Wizard zip host box, very often triggering the IP banning protection, although temporary, it would seem that some are being hit with 12 hr bans as the server thinks its being attacked. A royal pain if you are simply trying to grab the zip file. New Server, Bigger Pipe The Ares team has therefore invested in a new host, with a bigger 1 gbps pipe (previous was 50mbps), this “should” eliminate this problem for the downloads. Famous last words? The new url is  http://www.areswizard.co.uk (note – there is no need to add zip to the end of this – its a direct link) Full information on the Ares Forum The Ares Wizard Overview Just to try and clarify how this utility works, as so many ask if its down when in fact its not – or confusing builds failing to download or install correctly as a problem with the wizard. The Ares Wizard is hosted across three servers , one main a...

NJM Soccer, recently had to swap server with some help from the Ares team, hes back online! Take note, it takes a lot of time to rebuild all the links, so not everything is there as it was, but hes working hard to get it all back. Keep in touch with NJM via twitter – say thanks now and again, it goes a long way @njmsoccer NB: Prior to installation its advised to completely uninstall the old version, clear packages and restart Kodi – just want to ensure that Kodi doesn’t drag back any out of date info. Installing NJM Soccer NJM can be found in his original repo or in this guide we’ll use the Ares Projects repo, so lets get started; Start Kodi Highlight System and Select File Manager Double Click Add Source Enter this EXACTLY http://repo.ares-project.com/magic/ Click Done Change Name of Source to Ares Project Click Done Back to Kodi Home Screen Click System Click Add ons Click Install from Zip FIle Click Ares Project Source (or whatever you called it) Click rep...
