Removing that Annoying Kodi Upgrade Notification

Kodi Upgrade Notification

VERB

  • Raise (something) to a higher standard, in particular improve (equipment or machinery) by adding or replacing components.

NOUN

  • An act of upgrading something.

  • 1.‘a room upgrade from a twin to a duplex suite’

  • 1.1 An improved or more modern version of something, especially a piece of computing equipment.

You have just installed Kodi or a Fork of Kodi for the first time, why are you receiving these notifications about an upgrade? “I don’t want to upgrade yet” you say !  “I want to understand this version better first”. Because Kodi wants you to always upgrade to the best version available, you will see that annoying message appear shortly after starting.

As a beginner to Kodi trying to understand how to use it and where to go can be challenging at best. Should I press this? what happens if I don’t? What is this notification on my screen? Well, here’s another installment of our continuing series of Blogs to help a new user to understand Kodi. Rather than constantly clicking OK to remove the upgrade notice, we’ll show you a way to remove it completely.

How to Remove Upgrade Notice

This article will be split between Krypton with no build and Krypton with a build installed, the Durex Build. Both versions will be on Krypton 17.6. Now at time of publishing Leia, the new name for Krypton 18, is yet to be released in Beta format. But when it does, expect this notification to be just as annoying as it was in Krypton 17.1 to 17.6. Please note, this can be done in most if not all Forks of Kodi as well.

Krypton/ No build

upgrade

After opening Kodi, move the cursor over Add-ons, then move to the top row and select My add-ons.

upgrade

Click Services to continue.

upgrade

Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Version Check. So far so good right ?

Disabling

upgrade

Select Configure to continue.

upgrade

Finally, the last step is to select Enable Kodi version check? Clicking anywhere in the blue area as shown in the photo will do the trick. As you can see it is now disabled, but in order to complete the process you must select OK.  Failure to do so will not set the changes made. It is also recommended to reboot Kodi to ensure the changes are locked in.

Krypton with Build installed

upgrade

Since this build is using the Xonfluence Skin, you will need to select System. Unfortunately, due to the amount of different skins being used, I just can’t provide a Screenshot of them all. As long as you know where System is located, the following steps should be the same.

upgrade

Select Add-ons to continue.

upgrade

Since we are using a build there will be one (1) more step than there was in Krypton with no build. Click on My Add-ons to continue please.

upgrade

This should look familiar to you, I’m sure many of you have scrolled right by Services. Well not this time, select it please.

Disabling

upgrade

Once you open the Services section, scroll down to Version Check and click.

upgrade

Great work so far, but just a few more steps and you’re done. Click on Configure.

upgrade

For this example, I left the Version Check enabled. Click anywhere in the highlighted area to disable. The red dot to the right will dim, indicating it has been disabled. But wait ! please don’t forget to click on OK or all this work will be for nothing. Rebooting Kodi may be necessary.

In Conclusion

This was a simple set on instructions to follow but for some it does give some relief from seeing that annoying upgrade notification. Personally, I hated it, annoying to say the least. While I understand why it is there, I didn’t need the constant daily reminder. Have anymore questions that need answering? please join us in the Streaming World Forum. TV Addons - Crypto Mining Hack

If you have been using Kodi third party addons for any length of time, you cannot have missed the controversy that always seems to surround TV Addons and the antics of its owner, Adam Lackman.  In recent history there have been a number of high profile  repo “hacks” and if you think back a little further, there was the DDOS hidden in the popular Exodus add-on. TV Addons Hack & Virus History Exodus DDOS “bot” So if you dont recall TV Addons hugely popualr Exodus add-on had some code added to it to DDOS attack. This was in response to a clone or fork of the addon that TVA took exception against. This seems rather bizarre given the amount of forks that are flying around now! Here is a link to that article. Exodus Botnet We did remove a lot of the post – but heres some links showing the code and how it was added; Exodus DDOS code Target of DDOS TVA & Indigo Repo Hijacks So lets review the repo hijacks – hotly denied, but who else has a v...

Why Reboot Router: DNS Cache

Why reboot my Router ? How does flushing a DNS cache help resolve some issues, and while you’re at it what’s DNS?  We hope when you are finished with this article you will feel comfortable with a few things.  First off, we hope you feel you had DNS explained in some detail.  Secondly, we hope you understand a little further why it is important to reboot your router.  You would be very surprised with how a simple reboot of your router can fix many of the issues you are having. DNS First, a quick review of what DNS is. DNS is an acronym for the Domain Name System. As you probably already know, every device on a network is identified by an IP (Internet Protocol) address.  However, you and I rarely know or care what the IP addresses are; we use names instead, like “google.com”.  DNS is what maps from names to IP addresses.  When your computer accesses a domain name for the first time, it performs what’s called a DNS request...

Deleting Old non-working URL's from File Manager

Deleting URL’s from File Manager We have all used the File Manager in Kodi to install different URL’s for various links to Repositories or Add-ons.  Links become redundant for a number or reasons; however, the most common reason is abandonment by the developer.  A perfect example is the TVA Fusion link, it became invalid and the link will no longer connect. Why remove the url links ? Keeping these URL links installed in File Manager is harmless, but keeping the file manager uncluttered is never a bad habit.  Some of you may have typed the wrong url address by mistake.  Instead of removing it right away, you just re-type the correct url address.  I know how easy that is having done that myself on occasion.  As a result, you have many duplicate sources in your File Manager section. The removal method is exactly the same for Jarvis & Krypton.  Yet, I have combined photo examples for both just so you can follow along.  While I was...

Ares Wizard for Kodi - Updated .69 ( new sources added)

You may well have heard of the legal threats made to the Ares Project (more on this in another article) however, in the meantime we have edited the “contentious” content to avoid further legal harrasment. The Ares Wizard no longer has links to builds or add-ons. It still has one of the best Kodi video cache tools (the first in the scene to do this dynamically per device), and the best backup and restore tool. You can backup any build for safe keeping,  ut you can also restore ANY build zip using Ares restore option – it will auto detect the any full build restores (eg the skin settings) and perform a force close to ensure a proper and full restore. The Wizard must be a huge install? Just to reassure users of the Ares Wizard – its a very light install – the zip 2.5 megabytes and fully installed with all graphics etc is a mere 4.5 megabytes. Yes we know trolls from other jealous wizards/builds are claiming it adds 400Mb to installs (but they have no proo...

Ares Wizard - Retro Gaming

The Ares Wizard has had a few upgrades to bring more of what users demand, easy android installs and retro gaming being sought by many, so grab yourself a game controller and prepare to transform your android boxes in a few clicks, retro gaming is now on the Ares Wizard! Archive Logins Just before we delve into those updates, I also wanted to point out that Mr Dobson has figured out how to log into Archive via Kodi – this may make your eyes glaze over, so I’ll be brief; the high demand builds hosted on Archive recently hit a problem, where Archive forced logins to download – normally something of a bind from android boxes. Well if you create any account (even if you don’t actually use it) this login can be entered and this allows downloads from Archive – Ares is the ONLY Wizard to be able to do this. (take note Ares does NOT store this info, so you will have to key it in each time you are prompted to do so) Android Apps A few additional apps have been added...
