Why Reboot Router: DNS Cache

Why reboot my Router ?

How does flushing a DNS cache help resolve some issues, and while you’re at it what’s DNS?  We hope when you are finished with this article you will feel comfortable with a few things.  First off, we hope you feel you had DNS explained in some detail.  Secondly, we hope you understand a little further why it is important to reboot your router.  You would be very surprised with how a simple reboot of your router can fix many of the issues you are having.

DNS Cache

DNS

  • First, a quick review of what DNS is.

  • DNS is an acronym for the Domain Name System.

As you probably already know, every device on a network is identified by an IP (Internet Protocol) address.  However, you and I rarely know or care what the IP addresses are; we use names instead, like “google.com”.  DNS is what maps from names to IP addresses.  When your computer accesses a domain name for the first time, it performs what’s called a DNS request, which boils down to asking “Hey, what’s the IP address for ‘google.com’?”  Your computer is querying a DNS server whose job it is to answer exactly those kinds of questions.  “Found it: ‘google.com’ is ‘60.22.33.185’”.(just a fictitious address)

DNS Cache

Once your computer gets an answer, it’s allowed to remember it for a period of time.  Typically, it’s a day or two, but it actually varies based on the specific domain.  For as long as your computer remembers that “google.com” is “60.22.33.185”, it doesn’t have to ask anyone.  Once the time expires, it’s required to ask again, just in case it’s changed.  The memory of all the DNS lookups your computer has performed is called the ‘DNS cache’.  Sometimes, for various reasons, the cache becomes corrupt or out of date, or, to use a technical term, “messed up”.  The symptoms vary, but the most common is that you can’t get to some web sites in your browser.  You can “Flush” the DNS cache via Windows Command Prompt, but rebooting your machine has the same effect.  Your DNS cache is not preserved across a reboot.

Other DNS Caches

The IP address for the DNS server may well be the IP address of your router.  Many routers perform the DNS function for local networks.  If they need to, they make the DNS request from your ISP’s DNS servers on your behalf.

This allows two things:

  • Your router can look up machines on your local network that it already knows.
It knows about them since it was the device that assigned them their IP addresses in the first place.
And since machines on your local network are not known on the internet anyway, they would not show up in the internet’s DNS servers.

  • Your router can cache DNS lookups. That means if you have more than one machine going to the same site,
the first one might cause the router to have to look it up,
    but the second machine’s request for the same domain would already be in the router’s cache;
the router wouldn’t need to do anything more than simply return the answer.

And yes, this is another reason why rebooting your router is a frequent diagnostic step:  your router’s DNS cache can also become “messed up”. In fact, it happens more frequently than most people expect.  And just like your PC, rebooting your router forces it to start over with an empty DNS cache.

DNS is critical

DNS is a critical component of how things are located on the internet.  As a result, there are threats. Imagine what would happen if someone was able to change the DNS information in a cache, or on a server, maliciously.  You might ask for “goggle.com” and get some other random IP address, that would direct your browser to a malicious web site.

Now after reading all of the above you may ask yourself what has this got to do with Kodi ?  It’s about Computers ? Yes it is but the same applies to Android Boxes, FireTV & Sticks.  Your Router is the link to the Internet so preventing it from “messing up” and using Windows Command Prompt, just reboot your router, which is perhaps easier to remember.

In Conclusion

We hope this article has opened your eyes to the importance of rebooting your router.  Our second goal was to help you understand a little more about DNS cache and how this can play a role in your internet usage.  Should you have any questions at all please feel free to visit us at the  Streaming World Forum.  Our admin team is always available to assist you with your learning and troubleshooting needs.

Pron.tv, The New Alternative to Alluc.ee ? Part 2.

Pron.tv What is an API Code and in addition how will Pron.tv enhance my search results in Kodi. First of all, lets explain what an API Code is : Basically, an  API  specifies how software components should interact. Additionally, APIs are used when programming graphical user interface (GUI) components. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. A programmer then puts the blocks together. An application programming interface  key  ( API key ) is a code passed in by computer programs calling an application programming interface (API) to identify the calling program, its developer, or its user to the Web site. Pron.tv Add-on List As a result of following  Part 1 , it was necessary to provide a List of Current Add-ons that have Pron.tv in their list of Scrapers. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of Add-ons with pron.tv while doing my research. I will give a brief descript...

Click Here: Kodi Add-on by SkyDarks

Click Here is one of the newest Fork and it has a very clever name.  Invoking you to just “click here” to get all the movies and tv shows you could ever want.  This add-on doesn’t have any of the “extras” that some of the other forks have; however, it does work nicely.  Click Here has all the sames features you enjoyed in Covenant including the ability to add Trakt and Debrid accounts.  I like that the developer Swiper kept it close to the original and just changed up some artwork. Click Here: Current version of this addon is 1.0 This add on is “unofficial” and therefore not supported by Kodi Tv or XMBC foundations, please do not ask on their forums for help. You can unblock many “dns censored” sources with a smartdns solution  If you use p2p add ons, torrents, or in countries that prohibit streaming use a vpn from a reputable provider like Private Internet Access . How to Install Every Repo

The key thing to adding content to Kodi is via repositories – a “repo” is the “central storage point” for an authors add ons. Add-ons provide you with content, so you will see someone reference say Genesis and Lambda – Lambda is the author and has his repository, and Genesis is the add on held in that repo for you to install. A repo can have multiple add ons. These add ons are grouped as Program, Video, etc. I hope that’s simple enough – that’s my fifth version, if you have a simpler way to explain, please comment below and I’ll add it in! Repository Addresses Every repo has a url, an address (or source) you need to add into Kodi’s File Manager in order to install the repo into your Kodi locally. I have created a list of the most popular (I hope!) although this isn’t meant to be every repo every created. I am providing a list here of the repo’s rather than write 150 articles for each individual. This will also...

How to Add Your Personal Music Files in Krypton

Music Files in Krypton Add-ons that have Music/Radio are growing at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, sometimes the selections available are not quite everyone’s “cup of tea”. I’m a firm believer that Music makes The World Go Around. But sometimes I just wish I could listen to what makes “My world go around”. We all have a large selection of Music Files these days, so why not make them available to play on your version of Kodi Krypton and Forks of Krypton. WHAT TOOLS DO I NEED A USB flash drive or a External Hard Drive. Access to your personal files (if on a PC or Laptop) Device that has a USB slot or SD Card Download Manager , ES File Explorer as an example. I happened to use my PC due to it being easier to create the Photos needed for this article. How you decide to move your files will be up to you, use what ever option you feel the most comfortable with. Adding them to Kodi Krypton will remain the same. Ares Wizard URL Update 18/04/2016

It has become clear that the 3m+ downloads a month has become an issue on the current Ares Wizard zip host box, very often triggering the IP banning protection, although temporary, it would seem that some are being hit with 12 hr bans as the server thinks its being attacked. A royal pain if you are simply trying to grab the zip file. New Server, Bigger Pipe The Ares team has therefore invested in a new host, with a bigger 1 gbps pipe (previous was 50mbps), this “should” eliminate this problem for the downloads. Famous last words? The new url is  http://www.areswizard.co.uk (note – there is no need to add zip to the end of this – its a direct link) Full information on the Ares Forum The Ares Wizard Overview Just to try and clarify how this utility works, as so many ask if its down when in fact its not – or confusing builds failing to download or install correctly as a problem with the wizard. The Ares Wizard is hosted across three servers , one main a...
