If you got snarled in the URL Resolver bad update and wrecked your install you will certainly have the pain of a fresh install etched in your mind. You may have missed this on the last Ares Wizard update, but the back up system has now been activated.
You can access this from the main menu where the button has been for a while now but not functional.
Ares Wizard Backup
You can see the many options you have with this tool for complete or partial backups as required. This has some hidden gems lurking, as well as the obvious visible options listed such as keymaps, library, sources and even your advanced settings file (if you plan on fettling with it!)
Full System Backup
If you select the full backup option, the Ares Wizard can do a few clever things for you; ( be sure your set the destination folder for you backup before proceeding here)
Once you select “Full backup” and hit “Make Backup” the Ares Wizard backup system prompts you to skip unneeded files, like packages, thumbs and log files. This is a much better system than any I’ve seen thus far, as its skipping a lot of junk without the end user having to do this themselves. I’m sure builders are familiar with the process of “stripping down” before making a backup, but this is the first “end user” one I’ve seen that does this.
Not only dies it skip files, it will tell you what got skipped;
Now assuming your going to fresh start or something similar, Ares Wizard backup will now prompt you;
So you can download the zip prior to a rebuild and simply do an install from zip to reinstate the wizard, a nice touch I thought.
Summary
A great and versatile backup tool for Kodi users, making things easier for the beginners who wouldnt know to clear thumbs and packages before making a backup.
It has only one flaw I can see and that’s a lack of sequential backups. When you make a new backup it overwrites the the file made previously. The only way to counter this is renaming the backup.zip file manually after making a backup. I have flagged this with the author, so we may see this updated soon?
